I have always loved being outdoors and have spent a lot of time climbing the hills and mountains of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Wales, and Scotland. I live close to the Yorkshire Coast and I spend a lot of time photographing the coast and walking with my dog on one of my favourite beaches.
I love travelling, I’ve been very fortunate to have visited many parts of the Philippines. I have also travelled to the Middle East, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and The Maldives. In Europe, I have visited the Canary Islands, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, France, Greece, Norway and Italy. The places I’d most like to visit are Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, India, Japan and there’s still a lot of Italy I’d like to explore. I have had several holidays in Tenerife over the years and for a change, I recently visited Lanzarote and totally fell in love with the place.
I have a keen interest in photography and always carry a camera wherever I go. The articles on this website are mostly illustrated by my own photos.
I am a contributor to the Adobe and Shutterstock stock libraries. https://stock.adobe.com/contributor/132253/Michael%20Shannon

Music fills much of my spare time. I don’t have any particular musical talent, although I can read music and play the odd tune on a piano. I used to have a large vinyl collection which was replaced by an even larger CD collection. My taste is very eclectic, spanning classical, folk, pop, electronica, prog rock and heavy metal. I have a particular love of Romantic piano concertos, Gustav Mahler symphonies, Celtic folk, Pink Floyd, U2, Enigma, Genesis, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin, Runrig and Sandy Denny.
I went to Poppleton Road Junior School and then Nunthorpe Grammar School in York. I decided to return to education later in life as a mature student to study Applied Environmental Science and Geography at St John’s College in York.
“All that is gold does not glitter,J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
